After a long tour (beginning 1/21/96 in NYC), it's finally over... All the equipment, the t-shirts, the band, etc., packed away 'till the next tour... However, for the last show, they put on a great one...

While the tickets read "8:30PM", what came out first was a "all male revue", not seeing JAE and band amongst the strippers (I think some of the female JAE fans were down there yelling, "Steve! Steve!", but...), we got in the car and left! A little later, we came back and the first (unmemorable) opening act came out. Several us on "The Who Digest" were hanging out, telling funny stories and such... When Joni's Butterfly came out, we moved to the front stage as they put on a very good show. The crowd seemed to respond better to their kind of music (sorta like "Oasis") than in other clubs they've played with John... Sometime after midnight, John & company hit the stage...

For some reason, it actually seemed louder than previous shows, as 9 hours latter, my ears are still ringing--more so than the other 4 shows I was at! However, the sound apparently was better, and that was good! Here's what they played...

  • Heaven & Hell
  • Had Enough
  • Success Story
  • Trick Of The Light
  • Bridges Under The Water
  • The Real Me
  • Love Doesn't Last
  • Under A Raging Moon (crossed off the set list, but played anyway)
  • Boris The Spider
  • Life After Love
  • My Wife
  • Last Song
  • Summertime Blues

    Encores

  • Long Live Rock
  • Shakin' All Over (with the now, "famous" John & Steve duet)

After the show, John and band set up shop to sign autographs and say "hi" to the several people who stayed behind.

    So... there you have it!

Here're some comments on the Old Bridge, NJ show: I didn't write it down, but I think the setlist was the same as most of the recent shows. John seemed in a decent mood. It was impressive how both John and Steve were immediately aware of any little rhythmic flub. John's hands are completely mesmerizing so it's pretty hard to comment on much else. Plus, from where I stood directly in front of John's stack (with earplugs in) it was a total Entwistle immersion. I took out the plugs for `Shakin' All Over' but the notes mighta been more discernable with `em in. He was playing so fast by this point I don't think I could really follow his playing too well, just the rhythm.

This time on `Life After Love' he was doing right hand hammer-ons (?) rather than the fast runs from previous shows. He seemed to concentrate more of that `flying-finger' type of soloing in other numbers, especially the finale `Shakin'. It seemed like there were more different kinds of bass playing overall. Of all the songs, I thought `Bridges Under The Water' came across the best cuz it's well written and has a great groove and flow. It was cool on several numbers when he kicked on a footswitch that boosted the highs, or something, from his bass. And Steve's solo was unbelievable. Who's song is that `Under a Raging Moon'? It was great to get to see this band on tour, and from such a great vantage point. I hope they thought it was successful.
